Recycled Rubber Equine Footing
Soft, safe and
great for the environment
Shredded and crumb rubber goes by many names
depending on how is is being used. When used in horse arenas and
other equine applications, it is
called Footing.
In the equine environment
recycled rubber footing is mixed with sand in arenas and training pens to
provide a soft yet firm surface that drains well, lasts for years
and will not break down or compact the way organic footing materials
will. Rubber footing greatly reduces dust and its resilient nature
reduces stress on the horses muscles and joints.
For
equine footing applications, many users prefer uncolored granulated
rubber chunks, in sizes ranging from 1/4" to 1/2". Some users
specify larger chunks, up to 3/4" in size. Still others prefer their
rubber footing to be shredded, as opposed to granulated, making the
individual pieces more flat than rounded.
In addition to the size and
shape options, equine footing can be purchased in two "textures" as
well. Granulated rubber is available in
an all rubber composition, or in a version that retains some of the
polyester fibers contained in the side walls of many tires. Rubber
footing materials that include the fibers are commonly called "Black
& White" or "Salt & Pepper". Some users say that these fibers help
retain moisture thus reducing dust.
