Rubber Flooring Products
Soft, safe and great
for the environment
Protecting against slips and falls is
only part of a comprehensive floor safety
program. In some environments
falls are expected and the flooring system has to be designed to absorb
shock. Impact attenuation is the phrase used to describe the resilient
characteristics of shock absorbing flooring materials. One of the best materials
used to make resilient flooring is rubber recycled from worn out tires.
Recycled tire rubber
is first shredded or chopped into small pieces. Next all the steel
and polyester fibers are removed, (for some applications a small amount
of the polyester fibers are retained). This crumbed or shredded rubber is
then turned into a variety of extremely useful products ranging from floor
tiles to raw materials for roadways and running tracks.
Providing floor
safety products and services is cornerstone of the Diamond Safety Concepts
mission. In keeping with that focus, we have recently added a number
of recycled rubber products to the growing list of resilient and slip resistant
flooring solutions we offer.
Rubber flooring materials
have many potential applications. In its raw state crumbed or shredded rubber
can be used under playground equipment, on paths and walkways and as a footing
material in horse training rinks and arenas. When molded into floor tiles
or pavers, recycled rubber creates a superior flooring system that is at
the same time attractive, slip resistant, highly resilient and extremely
durable.
In the recreation
environment these materials are used in many ways. Rubber flooring products
are commonly used under playground equipment and in exercise rooms or playrooms.
Rubber tiles and pavers also make a terrific flooring system for anywhere
people walk in spiked or cleated shoes, such as at golf resorts and in baseball
dugouts. Other applications include ramps, walkways and decks in facilities
such as waterparks, ski resorts and around skating rinks.
Rubber flooring
materials have been used for years in the equine environment. Horses hate
to walk on concrete and other hard surfaces. When a champion racehorse is
worth millions of dollars, you don't take chances, so many of the finest
horse breeding facilities have installed rubber flooring as a way to reduce
the risk of a slip or fall. Used in stalls and wash areas rubber tiles or
pavers reduce dust, and make the these areas easier to keep clean and attractive
looking. Similarly, crumb or shredded rubber materials are commonly used
as "footing" in training rinks and arenas. When mixed with sand or DG, the
rubber particles create a soft but firm surface that reduces ruts and controls
dust.
